About Lewis Eisen

Lewis S. Eisen combines his legal background with his knowledge of policy writing to bring a clear, defensible approach to writing administrative policies, directives, and guidelines.

He obtained an Honours BA and a JD degree from the University of Toronto and practiced law for a few years. In 1986 he became an Information Technology consultant specializing in law office technology. Between 2001 and 2017 he worked for the Government of Canada, spending the last several years specializing in developing administrative and operational policies.

In 2014 he earned the Certified Information Practitioner (CIP) designation from the Association for Intelligent Information Management (AIIM). In 2020 he received the Britt Literary Award from ARMA International for a series of articles he wrote on the antiquated use of “must,” “may,” and “should,” in policy writing.

Lewis works with both profit and non-profit organizations that aim to provide high-quality skills training to their employees or members. He has written several books and dozens of articles for journals and newspapers, and speaks frequently at venues across the United States and Canada.
